Why Move to Fresno?

Fresno tends to get overlooked when people are contemplating a move to California due to it not being on the beach or part of Silicon Valley. As a result, Fresno has taken it upon itself to show outsiders just what they’re missing. We’ve listed some great reasons to move to Fresno below.

  • Make friends fast. Fresno is an incredibly friendly city. With people moving from all over the country, there’s a place for everyone. You’ll be sure to settle into your new city quickly with such friendly neighbours.
  • Fresh produce. Fresno is the agricultural capital of the world, producing more than 300 commercial crops every year. This includes one-fifth of the state’s wine grapes, making Fresno home to multiple world-class wineries.
  • Business is booming. New businesses are setting up shop in Fresno due to the lower land costs and access to major markets. This means more job opportunities and more amenities as the city grows.
  • Vibrant art scene. Due in part to Fresno’s diverse population, the art scene in the city is bustling and rich in culture. Once a month, the downtown and Tower District galleries and shops host ArtHop, an event featuring artist displays, special performances, and streetside art vendors.

The Best Areas to Live in Fresno

Fresno is full of great neighbourhoods and safe areas to live in. The city offers many options depending on you what your needs are and how far you want to be from work. Here are a few great neighbourhoods worth exploring.

  • Woodrow Park in northern Fresno is full of delicious restaurants and little shops. It boasts a rural, small-town atmosphere and is great for young professionals and families. Local favourite spots in this neighbourhood include Woodrow Park, the largest park in Fresno, and Shinzen Friendship Garden, a tranquil space and perfect place to meditate.
  • Fig Garden is, unsurprisingly, filled with fig trees, many of which have been growing since the early 1900s. This neighbourhood is very walkable and has many trails for both walking and biking. The architectural styles of the area include adobe, ranch, period revival, and bungalow.
  • Tower District was built in the 1930s and was once only accessible by streetcar. Now it has a bustling bar scene and is a popular area after dark. The neighbourhood is most popular with the younger crowds due to the abundance of events, restaurants, art galleries, and vintage record stores that can be found here.
  • Sunnyside on the southeast side of town is close to nearby highways for a stress-free commute downtown for work. This neighbourhood is small and peaceful, perfect for retirees or those looking for a quieter suburban place to live. There is also a private country club and golf course in the area.

What to Discover in Fresno

We could talk about art museums, walking trails, the Chaffee Zoo, and Island Waterpark as beloved places to visit in Fresno, but we know you’ll discover all of these things for yourself within days of arriving in Fresno. Instead, we wanted to draw your attention to the city’s best-kept secret that you’re sure to fall in love with: the Forestiere Underground Gardens.

The Forestiere Underground Gardens were created in the early 1900s by a Sicilian immigrant named Baldassare Forestiere. Taking useless farmland, Forestiere transformed it into a subterranean network of rooms, tunnels, and courtyards as an escape from the sweltering summer heat. All of this was done by hand and took roughly 40 years to complete, some areas going as deep as 25 feet underground and spanning over 10 acres. Forestiere even grew fruit trees and grapevines underground. Now, visitors are able to take tours of this expansive underground oasis and see some of these trees and grapevines that are still thriving.
