Why Move to BC
No matter what reason brought you to BC, there are plenty of others to make you want to stay. While no province is perfect, this is a genuinely great one to live in. Here are a few things to love about British Columbia:
Diverse Regions. There’s a reason the license plates say Beautiful British Columbia. This province boasts some impressive regions, with the Rockies in the east, a semi-arid “pocket desert” in the south Okanagan, and the world’s largest intact coastal temperate rainforests in the west.
High Quality of Life. Studies show that BC ranks as one of the best places to live in Canada and the world for the quality of life due to safety, cleanliness, and access to amenities.
Experience Every Season. While British Columbians do get a full Canadian winter, they’re generally a lot more tolerable than other parts of Canada. We also get to experience warm springs and autumns, and have gorgeous summers.
Where to Live in British Columbia
As previously mentioned, BC is quite a diverse province in terms of regions in which to live. We’ve broken down a few of them for you here to help you determine where’s best when looking at where to live.
Northern BC – This rugged region of the province is known for breathtaking wilderness and abundant outdoor recreation. It’s also where to go if you want to see glaciers up close. The major centres are Prince George and Prince Rupert, and smaller communities include Terrace, Kitimat, and Vanderhoof. It is also home to ancient rainforests, lava fields, glacial valleys, and coastal villages. History buffs might know this region as the home of the Frontier Cattle Company, founded by Richmond P. Hobson Jr. and Panhandle Phillips.
The Okanagan – A quick search of the Okanagan will tell you that this is BC’s wine country, as it’s where the province’s “pocket desert” is located. This also makes great conditions for growing fruit, as any drive through the area will have you passing many a fruit stand, and the best peaches in the province are grown out here. The major city in the area is Kelowna, along with Vernon, Penticton, and Osoyoos, for larger towns. Many communities are set up around Lake Okanagan, and locals love telling tourists about Ogopogo sightings, our version of the Loch Ness monster.
The Interior (Thompson-Nicola Regional District) – There’s actually another desert in British Columbia, allegedly the only true desert in Canada, in fact, located in the interior in the small community of Ashcroft. The major city in the area is Kamloops, where the North and South Thompson rivers meet and merge into simply the Thompson River, giving the city its indigenous, Secwepemctsín name of Tkʼemlups (river junction). The legendary Billy Miner enjoys folk hero status in this area for robbing the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The Coast and Island – This is arguably the most densely populated area of BC, covering the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland, and Vancouver Island. This area is where Vancouver and Victoria are located, along with that mild weather everyone else in Canada is envious of. Winters here are almost non-existent if you’re hoping for snow, but there is rain in abundance. There’s also sunshine, longer growing seasons, and the Pacific Ocean. Metro Vancouver and Victoria are where you’ll get the freshest sushi and most diverse cuisine in the province. If you’re a foodie, this is the area you’ll most want to check out.
