Moving from Ontario to California

Ontario and California are vastly different parts of North America, not just because they are located on opposite sides of the continent. While there aren’t many things Ontario and California have in common, both have distinct differences in their northern and southern region. For example, Northern California is most often associated with wine country while Southern California with beaches and Los Angeles. On the other hand, Northern Ontario is usually known for a stereotyped Canadian accent while Southern Ontario is home to Toronto and Canada’s capital, Ottawa.

Making a big move can be daunting, and moving from Ontario to California is no exception. Not only are you moving across the country, but you’re also crossing an international border. Why Should You Move to California?

Did you know that the population of California is larger than the entire population of Canada? Wow! With great population comes great opportunity, however, so don’t let that fact scare you away. There are so many reasons to California that we’d be here all day if we tried to list them all so we’ve boiled it down to just a few for you here:

  • Great Weather. When you think about California, the first thing you probably think about is the beaches. In fact, the weather is so nice in California that almost every day is beach day. It does get some rain, however, so you won’t want to throw out your umbrella just yet.
  • Adventure Time. From beaches to lakes, mountains to valleys, and everything in between. California’s distinct landscape will prevent lovers of the outdoors from ever feeling bored with the endless possibilities for recreation and nature.
  • Delicious Food. Along with diverse topography, California’s culture is also quite diverse, resulting in delicious foods that are always close at hand. Foodies can work their way through luxury restaurants and food trucks to their heart’s desire.
  • Culture. If you love visiting museums and taking in top performances, you’ll easily find places and events to appreciate the fine arts in California.

What to Love About Northern California

When you think about California, you more often than not think about palm trees and beaches before you think about forests and lakes. You might be surprised to learn that Northern California boasts many beautiful forests and lakes, not to mention the wine country of the Napa and Sonoma valleys. Far from the fast-paced lifestyle in Los Angeles, Northern California offers a more relaxed vibe and plenty of opportunities to get out in nature for outdoor lovers.

That’s not to say that Northern California is all small towns and isolation, however, as the heart of the Silicon Valley, San Jose and the quirky golden city of San Francisco are technically part of Northern California (though arguably are quite central). If you’re looking for a smaller city in Northern California to call home, consider Sacramento which has similar vibes to cities like Guelph and London in Ontario in terms of proximity to a bustling metropolis.

In addition to bustling cities, Northern California is home to Yosemite National Park, Big Sur, and it shares Lake Tahoe with Nevada. It’s basically a smorgasbord for outdoor activities. In fact, many Southern Californians take weekend getaways up in Northern California to enjoy all of these things that could be within an easy commute for you if you choose to settle in the area.

Southern California Highlights

At the other end of the state, Southern California offers residents the hot weather, palm trees, and sandy beaches you typically associate with this state. It’s also home to what many would call the Happiest Place on Earth: Disneyland. Though probably somewhere most Californians don’t visit on a regular basis, the idea of essentially being Mickey Mouse’s neighbour is every child’s dream. If you’re looking for surf, sand, and plenty of entertainment, Southern California is the area for you.

Along with the thriving metropolis of Los Angeles and star-studded Hollywood, Southern California is home to beach cities like Santa Monica, Venice, and San Diego. If you’re ever looking for some fun-filled family adventures, you’ll find no shortage of them between San Diego’s SeaWorld and Legoland California, Disneyland, and California Adventure. For child-free nature lovers, nearby Joshua Tree National Park offers year-round entertainment from music festivals to soulful retreats and campouts.
